The Development of HART (Holistic Approach to Relational Therapy)
In her many years of work with children with developmental and psychological difficulties, including those classified in the Autistic spectrum, Sara developed HART: a systematic, organised, and sensitive therapeutic modality that has proved to be a highly efficient means through which to access the heart of psychological and developmental problems.

HART uses techniques from play therapy, relational therapy, behavioural therapy, and family therapy in order to attend to each of the significant elements of a young clients life.

HART is Fun
HART recognises that ‘play is the language of children’ and uses play as a language to work through the various difficulties facing young clients including:

• Autism Spectrum Disorder and Asperger’s Disorder
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders
• Behavioural Problems
• Trauma
• Divorce or Separation of Parents
• Grief
• Learning Difficulties
• Developmental Delay Disorder

HART is Holistic
HART considers the ability to relate to others to be the central tenement of psychological wellbeing. Maximum importance is placed on the child’s place in the family system. The approach is holistic – all aspects of the well being of the child are considered:

• Social
• Emotional
• Physical
• Educational

HART Works
HART has resulting in overwhelmingly positive change in the functioning and well being of children who have been through this therapy.

Andrew
A four-year old boy with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Other than the very occasional utterance of “Daddy” Andrew was considered to be non-verbal. In the second one-hour session of this therapy he used more than 30 different words to express what he wanted and how he was feeling.

Kathy
A three-year old girl with Symbiotic Psychosis. When I first meet Kathy she was severely disturbed and developmentally delayed. After three months of this gentle approach she knew all her colours, could count to 10, she had learnt to enjoy imaginary play, and most importantly she was happy.
